Message From The President | Board Of Directors | Our Staff
Dear Friends,
What an amazing time for Healthy Futures of Texas! Although our organization is relatively young, our efforts to reduce teen and unplanned pregnancy in San Antonio and Texas are already making a difference.
Teen pregnancy – and unplanned pregnancy among single young adults – are epidemic in San Antonio and in Texas. Healthy Futures is dedicated to reducing both! Teen and unplanned pregnancy are two very sensitive issues, but we must address them if we are to reduce poverty, child abuse, school dropout, and abortion in our community.
Some of Healthy Futures’ exciting news and projects include:
- Working with the Mayor’s Initiative to Reduce Teen Pregnancy to achieve the goals of SA2020 – including a drop of 15% in the teen birth rate.
- The Healthy Futures Alliance (HFA), our community coalition of over 375 members, includes both pro-life and pro-choice people working together on prevention.
- HFA’s 2011 State Legislative Agenda calls for increasing access to checkups, birth control, and effective sex education. Our Agenda is endorse by:
- The City of San Antonio
- The Texas Medical Association
- Texas Pediatric Society
- Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
- Texas Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine
- Parents Have the Power/Teens Have the Tools: Healthy Futures’ education programs reach youth and parents in:
- San Antonio School District middle and high schools
- Charter Schools, Juvenile Justice Academy
- Agencies such as Haven for Hope, Municipal Court, Christian Hope Resource Center, Texas Youth Commission, Baptist Child and Family Services Residential Program, and others
- Big Decisions: This Texas-friendly “Abstinence-Plus” curriculum is offered
FREE on the internet, and is being used in 18 Texas school districts, and
many community agencies, including:- San Antonio Independent School District (ISD)
- Northeast (San Antonio) ISD
- Lackland ISD
- Irving ISD
- Lufkin ISD
- Pasadena ISD
- Pearsall ISD
- El Paso ISD
- Edcouch Elsa ISD
- Comfort ISD
- Dripping Springs ISD
- San Marcos Consolidated ISD
I believe that we can empower young people to take control of their lives – so
they can reach their goals and dreams. A key part of making this happen is to
draw on the energy and caring of parents, community members, and leaders.
Here are some ways that YOU can help:
- Join the Healthy Futures Alliance!
- Donate to Healthy Futures, a 501(c)(3) non-profit
- Talk to your kids about sex, relationships, abstinence, and birth control
- Volunteer to serve on your school district’s School Health Advisory Council
Sincerely,
Janet P. Realini, MD, MPH
President
